Is fighting the only way of resolving differences of opinion? What else can be done to reach a mutually acceptable settlement?
Answer:
No, fighting is the worse way to resolve differences of opinion. The world is full of different types of people. There are bound to be differences of opinion. We cannot go on fighting with each other. The best way to resolve a conflict is by engaging in meaningful discussion and seeing things from another person’s point of view.

A mutually acceptable settlement can happen only when the parties involved in a quarrel accept each other’s opinion without feeling a need to blame each other. When’everyone accepts their mistakes, and allows for differences in opinion, any conflict can be resolved. We need to see each other as an extension of our own selves instead of hating each other. Everyone is vulnerable in their own way.

Even a stopped clock tells the correct time two times a day. So, sometimes we need to agree to disagree and not take things personally. We should allow for and appreciate differences of opinion if we want to live peacefully in this world.

Question 2.
Have you ever been in a serious fight only to realize later that it was unnecessary and futile? Share your experience/views with others frankly and honestly.
Answer:
Yes, every time I have a fight with anyone, I realize the futility of the fight. I find it deeply unnecessary. Once I fought with a very dear friend over a trivial matter. She said some things that hurt me. So, instead of telling her that I was hurt, I also said things I knew would hurt her. We stopped talking. I had an uneasy feeling throughout the day.

I felt miserable because I wanted to talk to her, and tell her things. But she would not even look at me. Then, I thought that there is no use of fighting, and that I must apologize to her. I did so, and we quickly made up. I was so relieved. How could I have let her go so easily! I am glad that the fight did not last very long. After all, she knew all my secrets.

Question 3.
Why do some of us find it necessary to prove that we are better than others? Will you be amused or annoyed to read the following sign at the back of the car in front of you? I may be going slow but I am ahead of you.
Answer:
It is possible that most people find pleasure in proving that they are better than others. It is in reality a trait that almost all human beings possess. We all get a boost to our self-esteem or self-worth when we feel that we are better than the other person in any way. It helps us deal with feelings of insecurity and makes us feel better about ourselves.

People do it different ways, and some are quite open about it. The sign mentioned in the question is quite creative. It would amuse me if I came across such a sign, because it is not meant to belittle those who read it, but is merely a humourous quote. I would not mind waving to such a person and telling them that I find the sign funny.

In the following sentence elaborate the parts given in bold. Under the circumstances it was a very unfortunate remark for the bird to make.

The circumstances being referred to here is the absence of the bird. He explains it to the Princess by saying that his father-in-law insisted that he stay, and he almost did not come back. He returned only because he knew that the Princess would be anxious. The truth was that the Princess was quite worried about the little bird and was thinking of putting him in a cage for his safety.

They tried their best to destroy the friendship between the bird and Princess. They planned a strategy to do this, and were initially successful.

When she did as they had asked her to, they told her that the bird would get used to the cage in a while and would forget that he was ever free. Also, when she went to them for advice on how to make the bird eat, they called him “ungrateful” for refusing to eat, and also said that it would serve him right if he died.

Similarly, all living beings are given their free will by the Maker. It is wrong to take that away from them. We must uphold the values of freedom and liberty. ऊपर लिखे वाक्यों में रेखांकित शब्दों को ध्यान से देखो। ये शब्द रीतिवाचक क्रियाविशेषण का काम कर रहे हैं क्योंकि ये बताते हैं कि कहने, बोलने और उठने की क्रिया कैसे हुई। ‘कर’ वाले शब्दों के क्रियाविशेषण होने की एक पहचान यह भी है कि ये अक्सर क्रिया से ठीक पहले आते हैं। अब तुम भी इन पाँच क्रियाविशेषणों का वाक्यों में प्रयोग करो।

गद्यांशों की सप्रसंग व्याख्या

1. केशव के घर ……………….. पढ़ने-लिखने से !

प्रसंग- प्रस्तुत गद्यांश हमारी पाठ्य-पुस्तक ‘वसंत’ में संकलित पाठ ‘नादान दोस्त’ से लिया गया है। इसके लेखक ‘मुंशी प्रेमचंद’ जी हैं। इस पाठ में उन्होंने बालपन में उठने वाली जिज्ञासाओं को बड़े ही मनोवैज्ञानिक ढंग से प्रस्तुत किया है।

व्याख्या- केशव के घर की कार्निस पर एक चिड़िया ने अंडे दिए थे। उन अंडों को सेने के लिए एक चिड़िया निरंतर वहाँ आती जाती थी। जब भी वे सुबह को उठते तो चिड़ा-चिड़िया को वहाँ बैठे पाते। उनका रोज सुबह उठकर चिड़िया को वहाँ बैठे देखने का क्रम निरंतर चल रहा था। दोनों बच्चे उनको देखने में इतना मग्न हो जाते कि उनको पता ही नहीं रहता कि कुछ खाना-पीना भी है। उनको अपनी मन पसंद दूध जलेबी की भी सुध न रहती थी। दोनों के मन में अनेक प्रकार के प्रश्न उठते-रहते कि अंडे कैसे होंगे? कितने बड़े होंगे? उनका रंग कैसा होगा? क्या खाकर वे अंडे बड़े होंगे? फिर उन अंडों से बच्चे किस प्रकार निकलेंगे? उनके लिए कैसा घौंसला होगा? किस प्रकार रहेंगे? वे दोनों बच्चे अपने आपसे ही प्रश्न करते और स्वयं ही उनका उत्तर दे देते। घर का कोई व्यक्ति उनकी जिज्ञासा शांत करने वाला नहीं था न तो अम्मा जी को अपने कामों से फुरसत थी न पिताजी को अपने दफ्तर के कामों से। उन बच्चों की जिज्ञासा उनके मन में ही दबी रह जाती।

2. किवाड़ केशव ………………. बातें थीं।

प्रसंग- प्रस्तुत गद्यांश हमारी पाठ्य-पुस्तक ‘वसंत’ में संकलित पाठ ‘नादान दोस्त’ से लिया गया है। प्रेमचंद जी ने यहाँ बच्चों के भोलेपन का स्वाभाविक चित्रण किया है।

व्याख्या- जब अम्मा ने आकर बच्चों को डाँट लगाई तो श्यामा ने यह नहीं बताया कि कमरे का दरवाजा केशव ने खोला था। श्यामा भले ही केशव को कितनी धमकियाँ दे रही थी कि यदि तुम मुझे अंडे नहीं दिखाओगे तो मैं अम्मा से बता दूँगी। परन्तु उसे डर था कि केशव बेचारा पिट जाएगा अतः वह चुप रही। केशव को डर था कि श्यामा उसकी शिकायत अवश्य ही करेगी। वह डर के कारण काँप रहा था क्योंकि उसने श्यामा को अंडे नहीं दिखाए थे। उसको विश्वास नहीं था कि वह माँ को शिकायत लगाए बिना रहे। श्यामा को अपने भाई से प्यार था शिकायत न करने की यह भी वजह हो सकती है, दूसरी वजह यह भी हो सकती है कि वह भी इस कसूर में केशव के साथ भागीदार थी।

कविता का सार

केशव के घर के कार्निस पर एक चिड़िया ने अंडे दे रखे थे। केशव व उसकी बहिन श्यामा बड़े ध्यान से चिड़िया को वहाँ आते-जाते देखते थे। उनको देखने में दोनों बच्चों को बहुत आनंद मिलता था। वे इतने तल्लीन हो जाते थे कि उनको खाने पीने की भी सुध नहीं रहती थी। अंडों के बारे में जानने के लिए उनके मन में बहुत जिज्ञासा थी। अंडों से बच्चे किस प्रकार निकलेंगे? फिर उनके कैसे पर निकलेंगे, उनकी इन जिज्ञासाओं को शांत करने वाला कोई न था। वे अपने सवालों का अपनी कल्पना के आधार पर ही उत्तर दे देते। जब कई दिन हो गए तो फिर एक सवाल खड़ा हो गया कि जब बच्चे निकलेंगे तो चिड़िया उनके लिए दाना कहाँ से लाएगी। उन दोनों ने कार्निस पर दाना रखने एवं उनके रहने की समस्या का समाधान करने की सोची। उन्होंने निश्चय किया कि घौंसले के ऊपर कपड़े की छत बना दी जाए। श्यामा माँ की आँख बचाकर चुपके से मटके से चावल ले आई। केशव ने पानी पीने के बर्तन का इन्तजाम किया। उनके ऊपर छाया करने के लिए वे कूड़ा फेंकने वाली टोकरी ले आए।

गर्मी के दिन थे उनके पिताजी दफ्तर गए हुए थे तथा माता दोपहर में सो रही थी। बच्चों को अपने काम को अन्जाम देने का यह सबसे उपयुक्त समय लगा। वे चुपचाप बाहर निकल आए। केशव कमरे से एक स्टूल ले आया परन्तु स्टूल छोटा था उस पर चढ़कर कार्निस तक हाथ नहीं जा रहा था। श्यामा स्टूल के नीचे रखने के लिए नहाने वाली चौकी ले आई। अब चौकी पर स्टूल रखकर कार्निस तक पहुंचा जा सकता था। श्यामा ने बड़े ध्यान से स्टूल को पकड़कर रखा केशव कार्निस तक पहुँचा। केशव ने बताया कि यहाँ केवल तीन अंडे हैं। श्यामा भी अंडों को देखने के लिए लालायित थी। केशव ने कहा कि तुम्हें भी दिखा दूंगा पहले तू चिथड़े तो ले आ। केशव ने वहाँ दाना-पानी रख दिया। फिर श्यामा जिद करने लगी तो केशव ने कहा तू गिर पड़ेगी तो अम्मा से मुझे मार पड़ेगी, क्या करेगी देखकर जब अंडों से बच्चे निकलेंगे तो उनको देख लेना।

अब दोनों चिड़िया बार-बार कार्निस पर आती और बगैर वहाँ बैठे ही चली जाती थी। श्यामा अंडे न देख पाने के लिए नाराज थी। वह केशव को माँ से शिकायत करने की धमकी दे रही थी। तभी माँ आ गई वह उनको कहने लगी जब तुमको मना किया था तो तुम यहाँ क्यों आए। श्यामा ने माँ से कुछ नहीं कहा कि दरवाजा किसने खोला था। माँ ने दोनों को डाँट-डपटकर फिर उनको कमरे में बंद कर दिया। चार बजे श्यामा की आँख खुली तो वह दौड़ी कार्निस के पास आई। उसने कार्निस की ओर देखा तो वहाँ टोकरी का पता नहीं था। अंडे नीचे गिर गए थे। केशव घबराकर बाहर आया। उनके चेहरे का रंग उड़ा हुआ था। श्यामा पूछ रही थी कि भइया बच्चे कहाँ उड़ गए। केशव ने उसे डाँटते हुए कहा कि तेरे सर में देखती नहीं अंडे टूटे पड़े हैं। तभी उनकी माँ हाथ में सोटी लेकर बाहर आई और पूछा कि तुम यहाँ धूप में क्या कर रहे हो। श्यामा ने बताया कि अम्मा जी चिड़िया के अंडे टूटे पड़े हैं। अम्मा बोली कि तुमने अवश्य ही उनको छुआ होगा। श्यामा ने अपने भाई पर तरस खाए बगैर ही कह दिया कि अम्मा केशव ने अंडों को छेड़ा था। माँ ने कहा, क्या तुमको इतना पता नहीं कि छूने से अंडे गंदे हो जाते हैं। चिड़िया फिर उनको नहीं सेती। माँ ने कहा इस दुष्ट केशव ने तीन जाने ले लीं इसकी वजह से ही ये अंडे फूटे हैं। केशव ने रोनी सूरत बनाते हुए कहा मैंने तो अंडों को गद्दी पर रखा था। माँ को हँसी आ गई परन्तु केशव के मन में कई दिनों तक अपनी गलती पर अफसोस होता रहा। वह इस घटना को याद करके कभी-कभी रो पड़ता था। इसके बाद वहाँ वे चिड़ियाँ दिखाई नहीं दीं।

I had heard a lot of things about a man called Ernest in the Great Stone Face Village. I thought that it would be worthy of my time and go and meet him. But I did not want to reveal my identity to him, as I did not want him to pretend.

I saw it like a spiritual adventure. I would meet a man whose actions are noble and coincide with his words. When I went to his simple abode, I knocked at the door. An old man with the most radiant and kind face greeted me. I told him that I was a traveller and was looking for a place to stay for the night. He readily agreed. I must confess that this man has the most pleasant and the kindest face I have ever seen.

This meek and gentle man has the soul of an angel. He is as innocent as a baby, and as wise as a sage. We spoke at length about profound matters in the simplest of ways. I noticed that I could pour my heart over to him. My communion with him is as close I could have ever reached to God. And I am glad that I took this journey and came to meet him. I know that I have found a lifelong friend and mentor in him.
