Answer:
Penny Baxter allowed Jody to go find the fawn and raise it because he knew that its mother had saved his life. He thought that it was his responsibility to do something for the fawn now that it did not have a mother. He did not want to be ungrateful to leave it to starve alone.

What did Doc Wilson mean when he said, “Nothing in the world ever comes quite free ”?
Answer:
Doctor Wilson meant that since the Baxter family had taken away the fawn’s mother’s life, they ought to help the fawn. They needed to take care of and save it from starvation.

Answer:

Jody’s mother does not want to keep the fawn at her home. She is reluctant to the idea. She reacts in this way because she had no idea how they were going to feed it, as there wouldn’t be enough milk for it at her home.

Do you think it is right to kill an animal to save a human life? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer:
No, I do not think that it is right to kill an animal to save a human life. This is so because animals are also living beings and they also have as much right to live on the planet as every other human being. Would we kill one human being to save an animal, or another human being? If not so, we should not do the same towards animals. If we cannot give life, we have no right to take it away as well.

Question 2.
Imagine you wake up one morning and find a tiny animal on your doorstep. You want to keep it as a pet but your parents are not too happy about it. How would you persuade them to let you keep it? Discuss it in groups and present your arguments to the class.
Answer:
I would persuade my parents by telling them that I would take care of the pet, and that they would not have to do anything. I would tell them how much it means to me to have a constant companion, and not having to feel lonely.

I would also focus on how growing up with animals makes one sympathetic and kind. I am sure they will agree with me when I tell them that animals are more loving and affectionate.

Imagine you have a new pet that keeps you busy. Write a paragraph describing your pet, the things it does, and the way it makes you feel.
Answer:
I have a pet dog, and we call him Lucky. He is the most energetic and playful dog I have ever come across. He is more like a son to me than a dog. He is a black Labrador, and has a very soft coat. He has hazel eyes and has long ears, probably because his mother was a cocker spaniel.

We take him for a walk two times every day, once in the morning and once in the evening. He has to be taken on a leash, and this pains me. So, I let him on a loose leash in the morning when there’s hardly anyone on the roads.

Coming home to him is the best part of my day. He jumps and leaps on me when I reach home, as if he is seeing me after months. He greets me by wagging his tail so vigorously. He is a great companion, but is not at all obedient. He dirties the bed almost every other day. In reality, I like sleeping next to my warm, fuzzy friend.

Human life is dependent on nature (that’s why we call her Mother Nature). We take everything from nature to live our lives. Do we give back anything to nature?

Nature offers us many gifts. This is why we often call it the Mother Nature. It sustains us, and provides us resources like shelter, air, sun, water and fossil fuels. We need nature to survive and thrive. But at the same time, nature is fragile. We should not harm it by our inconsiderate actions.

In This is Jody’s Fawn, Jody s father uses a ‘home remedy ’for a snake bite. What should a person now do if he or she is bitten by a snake? Are all snakes poisonous? With the help of your teacher and others, find out answers to such questions. Then write a short paragraph on — what to do if a snake chooses to bite you.
Answer:
If a person is bitten by a snake, they must be immediately taken to the hospital. No, not all snakes are poisonous. Most of them are harmless.

If a snake bites a person, the most important thing to do is not to panic. The victim should not be moved and should be immobilized. His/Her heart rate should not be allowed to rise as it would make the venom spread faster in the body. The affected area should be bandaged firmly with a sprint.

The patient should be kept warm. He or she should not be given any food to eat, or anything else to drink. The bite area should be gently cleaned with antiseptic. The only remedy for venomous snakebite is the anti-venom serum, which is available at most government hospitals and public health centres.

Peggy said that she had never called Wanda a foreigner and made fun of her name. She thought Wanda did not have sense to know that she was making fun of her, she thought her to be too dumb. Maddie was sorry for her behaviour and how wonderful the whole school thought she was. Both wanted to request her not to move from there. Peggy and Maddie would fight anyone who wouldn’t be nice to her. Peggy realised her fault. It shows that she was not a bad human being. She never realised that her innocent fun would hurt Wanda to such an extent. She had a soft corner for her by the end of the story.

Wanda Petronski was a young Polish girl. She studied in a school with some American children. She was an introvert girl who rarely spoke to anybody in the school. She usually occupied the seat next to the last seat in the row in the corner where only rough boys sat.

Maddie and Peggy were good friends. Peggy was a pretty and rich girl. Maddie was not so rich. She- knew that Peggy was making fun of Wanda but she never stopped her. She did not want to lose Peggy as a friend. She had compassion and sympathy for Wanda. She did not appreciate Peggy’s act of making fun of Wanda but never opposed her. It shows Maddie was not a bold girl. She did not have courage to say right things right. She was selfish to some extent. Yes, in my opinion it was her self-interest and lack of courage that stopped her from helping Wanda.

Peggy and Maddie both were good friends. They studied in the same school and the same class. They were American girls. Peggy was a rich, pretty girl with blonde hair. Maddie was also a pretty girl but she was not as rich as Peggy. Both, Maddie and Peggy used to make fun of Wanda. Peggy never missed any opportunity of teasing Wanda. Maddie belonged to a poor family.

She was always with Peggy but she had sympathy for Wanda too. She did not like Peggy making fun of Wanda. She wanted to stop Peggy but could never muster the courage for the same. Maddie had a different temperament than Peggy. In the end when they came to know that Wanda was leaving the school, Maddie was affected the most. She came out as a better human being by the end of the story.

She won the hearts of everyone by her gesture. It shows that to win other’s money is not everything. Talent, plays a very important role in one’s life. In long run money and beauty do not pay, it is the skill and talent which help us.

The poem The School Boy is about a school boy who does not like to go to school. He wants to enjoy the summer morning listening to the sweet birds. He finds school dull and uninteresting. He feels like a bird in a cage, listening to the boring school lessons. He thinks that he is not getting a chance to blossom, and is being nipped in the bud because of all the sorrow he gets by going to school.

On the other hand, the poem ‘The One Furrow’ is about a small boy who seems to like attending school. He would carry his ruler, pencil and slate under his arm and make way for school readily.

But as he grew up, he was unable to find the same peace of mind at school that he used to. This is why he went back to farming and to nature. It is in his farm that he found peace and rest.
