वैदिक इतिहास में शहनाई का कोई उल्लेख नहीं मिलता। इसे संगीत शास्त्रांतर्गत ‘सुषिर-वाद्यों’ में गिना जाता है। अरब देश में फूंककर बजाए जाने वाले वाद्य जिसमें नाड़ी (नरकट या रीड) होती है, को ‘नय’ बोलते हैं। शहनाई को ‘शाहेनय’ अर्थात् ‘सुषिर वाद्यों में शाह’ की उपाधि दी गई है। सोलहवीं शताब्दी के उत्तरार्द्ध में तानसेन के द्वारा रची बंदिश, जो संगीत राग कल्पद्रुप से प्राप्त होती है, में शहनाई, मुरली, वंशी, शृंगी एवं मुरछंग आदि का वर्णन आया है।

Tilak was born on July 23,1856 in Maharashtra. After completing his schooling, he joined Deccan College in Pune. As a college student he enjoyed participating in discussions and debates and devoted ample time to physical exercise. He graduated in 1877.
