Answer 2.
Let α = √3, β = √3 be the given zeroes and γ be the third zero, then
α + β + γ = \(-\frac { -4 }{ 1 } \)
√3 – √3 + γ = 4
γ = 4
Hence, third zero is 4.

Answer 3.
Given equation is,
Here A = 1, B = k, C = 9
∵ Roots are real
∵ D ≥ 0
⇒ B² – 4AC ≥ 0
⇒ k² -4 × 1 × 9 ≥ 0
⇒ k²- 36 ≥ 0
⇒ k² ≥ 36
⇒ k² ≥ 6²
⇒ k ≥ 6 or k ≤ -6
So,the least positive value for which the given equation has real roots is k = 6.

Answer 7.
6n = (2 x 3)n = 2n x 3n
6n cannot end in zero for any natural number ‘n’.
To a number end in zero, ‘2′ and ‘5’ both must be factor of the number.
Factor ‘5’ is not present in 6n so it will not end in ‘0’ for any natural number ‘n’

Answer 8.
Given A.P. is 5, 17, 29, 41..
Here,
a = 5, d = 17 – 5 = 12
Let nth term of the A.P. is 120 more than its 15th term.
Then, according to the question,
an = 120 + a15
a + (n-1)d = 120 + a + 14d
(n-1) × 12 = 120 + 14 × 12
(n-1) × 12 = 288
n-1 = 24
n = 25
∵ Required term is 25th term.

Answer 12.
Favourable cases : M, A, T, H, E, I, C, S
=> No. of favourable cases = 8
=> n(E) = 8
Total cases = 26
=> n(S) = 26
Probability = \(\frac { n(E) }{ n(S) } =\frac { 8 }{ 26 } =\frac { 4 }{ 13 } \)

SECTION-C

Answer 13.
Given polynomial is,
p(x) = 4√3x² – 2√3x – 2√3 = 0
=> 2√3 (2x² – x -1) =0
=> 2√3 (2x²-2x + x-1) =0
2√3 [2x(x – 1) + 1(x – 1)] =0
2√3 (2x + 1)(x – 1) =0
⇒  2x + 1 = 0 ⇒ x = \(-\frac { 1 }{ 2 }\)
and x – 1 = 0 ⇒ x = 1
∵ x = \(-\frac { 1 }{ 2 }\), 1
Now
Sum of zeroes = \(-\frac { 1 }{ 2 } +1=\frac { 1 }{ 2 } =\frac { -Coefficient\quad of\quad x }{ { Coefficient\quad of\quad x }^{ 2 } } \)
Product of zeroes = \(-\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \times 1=\frac { 1 }{ 2 } =-\frac { 1 }{ 2 } =\frac { Constant\quad term }{ { Coefficient\quad of\quad x }^{ 2 } } \)
Hence, relationship between zeroes and coefficient is verified.

Given :
Circle with centre 0 with exterior point T having TP and TQ as tangents.
To prove : ∠PTQ = 2∠OPQ
Construction : Join PQ.
Proof : TP = TQ
CBSE Sample Papers for Class 10 Maths Paper 1 Ans.17.4
[Tangents to a circle from an external point are equal]
⇒ ∆TPQ is isosceles.
⇒ ∠1 = ∠2
[Angles opposite to eqaul sides of a triangle are equal in length]
Let
∠PTQ = θ
In ∆PTQ,
∠1 + ∠2 + θ = 180°
∠1 + ∠1 = 180° – θ
2∠1 = 180° – θ
∠1 = \(\frac { { 180 }^{ 0 }-\theta }{ 2 } =({ 90 }^{ 0 }-\frac { \theta }{ 2 } )\)
∠TPO = 90°
[Radius is perpendicular to the tangent at the point of contact]
∵ ∠OPQ = 90° – ∠1 = 90° – \(-({ 90 }^{ 0 }-\frac { \theta }{ 2 } )=\frac { \theta }{ 2 }\)

From equation (i) and (ii),
∠OPQ = \(\frac { 1 }{ 2 }\) ∠PTQ

Answer 22.
Given :
Rectangular tank :
Length = 11 m
Breadth = 6 m
Level of water, H = 5 m
Cylindrical tank :
Radius = 3.5 m
Let the level of water in cylinderical tank be h.
Then,
Vol. of water in cylindrical tank = Vol. of water in rectangular tank
πr²h = L × B × H
\(\frac { 22 }{ 7 } \) × 3.5 × h = 1 × 6 × 5
22 × 0.5 × 3.5 × h = 11 × 6 × 5
h = \(\frac { 11\times 6\times 5 }{ 22\times 0.5\times 3.5 } \)
h = 8.57 m.

Answer 25.
Let price of a book be ₹ x and number of books be n.
Then nx = 300
Also (x – 5) (n + 5) = 300
=> nx + 5x -5n-25 = 300
5x – 5n – 25 =0
x – n – 5 = 0
We have,
n = \(\frac { 300 }{ x } \)
Equation (ii) becomes,
x – \(\frac { 300 }{ x } \) – 5 = 0
x² – 5x – 300 = 0
x² – 20x + 15x – 300 = 0
x(x-20) + 15(x-20) = 0
(x-20) (x+15) = 0
x = 20, -15
x ≠ – 15, as price of a book cannot be negative.
∵ price of each book is ₹20

OR

We have,
\(\frac { 1 }{ (x-1)(x-2) } +\frac { 1 }{ (x-2)(x-3) } \frac { 2 }{ 3 }\) x ≠ 1,2,3
\(\frac { (x+3)+(x-1) }{ (x-1)(x-2)(x-3) } =\frac { 2 }{ 3 }\)
3(x-3) + 3(x- 1) = 2(x – 1) (x – 2) (x-3)
3x – 9 + 3x – 3 = 2(x – 1) (x – 2) (x-3)
6x – 12 = 2(x – 1) (x – 2) (x-3)
6(x – 2) = 2(x – 1) (x – 2) (x-3)
3 =(x-1) (x-3)
3 = x2– 3x – x + 3
x² – 4x = 0
x(x – 4)= 0
x = 0 or 4

Answer 26.
Statement : The line drawn from the mid-point of one side of a triangle parallel to another side bisects the third side.
Given : A ∆ABC is which D is the mid-point of side AB and the line DE is drawn parallel to BC,
meeting AC at E.
To prove : E is the mid-point of Ac.
Proof : In ∆ABC,
DE || BC
∴ \(\frac { AD }{ BD } =\frac { AE }{ EC } \)
Since, D is the mid-point of AB
∴ AD = BD
Thus, from equation (i),
\(\frac { AE }{ EC } =1\)
⇒ AE = EC
Hence, E bisects AC.

OR

Given : Two triangles ABC and DEF such that ΔABC ~ ΔDEF
To prove :
CBSE Sample Papers for Class 10 Maths Paper 1 Ans.26.1
\(\frac { Area(\triangle ABC) }{ Area(\triangle DEF) } =\frac { { AB }^{ 2 } }{ { DE }^{ 2 } } =\frac { { BC }^{ 2 } }{ { EF }^{ 2 } } =\frac { { AC }^{ 2 } }{ { DF }^{ 2 } } \)

Construction : Draw AL ⊥ BC and DM ⊥ EF
Proof : Since, similar triangles are equiangular and their corresponding sides proportional,
Therefore, ∠A = ∠D, ∠B = ∠E, ∠C = ∠F
and \(\frac { AB }{ DE } =\frac { BC }{ EF } =\frac { AC }{ DF } \)
Thus, in ∆ALB and ∆DME, we have
∠ALB = ∠DME = 90°
and ∠B = ∠E
So, by AA-criterion of similarity, we have
∆ALB ~ ∆DME
⇒ \(\frac { AL }{ DM } =\frac { AB }{ DE } \)
From (i) and (ii), we get
\(\frac { AB }{ DE } =\frac { BC }{ EF } =\frac { AC }{ DF } =\frac { AL }{ DM } \)

OR
Let the two digit number be l0x + y.
Then, according to the question,
Case 1:
l0x + y = 8(x + y) – 5
l0x + y = 8x + 8y – 5
2x – 7y = – 5
Case II:
16(x – y) + 3 = 10x + y
16x – 16y + 3 = 10x + y
6x – 17y = – 3
Multiplying equation (i) by 3 and then subtracting it with equation (ii), we get
CBSE Sample Papers for Class 10 Maths Paper 1 Ans.29.3
Substituting the value of y in equation (i),
2x – 7 × 3 = – 5
⇒  2x – 21 = – 5
2x = – 5 + 21
⇒  2x =16
⇒  x = 8
Therefore, required number is 83.

SECTION-A
Reading – 20 Marks

Question 1.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

1. Heart disease is caused by inflammation. And various factors could cause that inflammation. Blood cholesterol is not entirely blameless. There can be tiny cholesterol bubbles inside the arteries and they could cause heart attacks when they burst. But what makes them burst is still not clear.

2. What we do know, however, is that another spoon of ghee will not cause the cholesterol bubbles to burst. The researchers found that in every study they looked at, the lowering of fat levels in diets did not reduce the incidence of heart attacks, strokes or the coronary disease itself.

3. So, what should we, as Indians, take away from all this research? I am not the doctor. But speaking as a layman who likes reading up on this stuff. Here are some tentative conclusions:

  • Do not waste money on expensive oils unless you actually like the taste. Olive oil is the subject of huge scams (which I wrote about here a few years ago) revolving around its origin and virginity. It is not clear that it helps greatly in reducing heart disease. And in any case, there are many cheaper oils with many of the same properties as olive oil.
  • Do not get too bothered if doctors start telling you to give up red meat. This may make sense in American where beef has a high fat content but in India, chicken often has more fat than our goats. And you are better off eating goat meat (which is usually free range) than nasty industrial broiler chicken.
  • Statins are a controversial medical subject, so you should probably listen to your doctor and not to me. But here’s what I do know: the obsession with blood cholesterol levels is falling out of favour in modem medicine. The market for statins used to be $20 billion till recently. But after the American Heart Association put out guidelines suggesting to doctors that they prescribe them less, the market has dropped to $12.5 billion.
  • None of this is to suggest that you should give up eating rice or rotis and gorge on butter. If ‘ there is one thing I have learnt after years of seeing scientists change their minds, it is this:
    ignore the fats. The basic Indian diet was always okey with the possible exception of sugar (we may eat too much of it).
  • So pay no attention to the same people who tell us to use vanaspati (which is really bad for you) instead of ghee (which is fine), who try and control our red meat consumption and who shove too many expensive medicines down our throats.
    Minimise your fast food intake and eat simple and eat well. That, and a little exercise, should be enough to keep you going.

Question 1.1.
On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer any eight of the following questions in brief:

  1. What is the cause of heart disease?
  2. What have the researchers found?
  3. What is the subject of huge scams?
  4. Why should one not bother if doctor advises to give up red meat?
  5. What kind of food should be avoided?
  6. What are stains?
  7. What has been the guideline to doctor regarding stains?
  8. What has been advised related to olive oil?
  9. In para 3, find the antonym of’cheaper’.

Question 2.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
1. Yoghurt is a natural source of protein, calcium and potassium, with a single serving of yoghurt giving you significant amounts of essential vitamins and minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, vitamins B12 and B5, riboflavin, zinc and iodine. “Yoghurt is not a solution to all your dietary needs but it’s a driver to propose healthier habits to be as close as possible to the need to meet essential nutrients,” says Coupez.

2. For people who have difficulties in digesting fresh milk product because they are lactose mal-digesters, yoghurt is the best option. “Yoghurt is the safest bet among all milk products. It is rich in lacto-bacillus, the probiotic bacteria that work wonders for the gut, it aids digestion and lowers symptoms of diarrhoea and constipation,” says nutritionist Richa Anand, a consultant at Mumbai’s Dr. LH Hiranandani Hospital. “I recommend it for kids on a regular basis.”
Anand recommends having yoghurt with every meal, particularly for pregnant women, people who exercise heavily and those recovering from diseases.|

3. Danone’s lab in Palaiseau, France, has an intestinal-digestion simulator to test the survival of bacteria inside the digestive system. “To check the viability of the bacteria in different stages of digestion, the simulator mimics effects of saliva in the mouth and stomach and intestinal acids, to study influencing factors for the survival of bacteria in the digestive system,” says Jean-Michel Faurie, expert probiotics, starters and fermentation, Danone.
“It takes 1.5 to 5 years from tweaking a technology to make changes to a product or create a completely new technology and product altogether,” he says.

4. Weight Loss Impact: Yoghurt is also favoured by people looking to lose weight because it’s low-fat and if unsweetened, low-calorie. “There is usually no downside to making Yoghurt a staple part of your diet, but people who are obese, diabetic or have high cholesterol must go . to have Yoghurt made from skimmed milk,” says Anand.

5. Indrayani Pawar, a dietician at Hinduja Healthcare Surgical, Mumbai, says that there are several myths about eating Yoghurt that need to be busted. A common one is that it acts as on irritant for people with respiratory and lung problems. “People believe the sourness in Yoghurt induces cough and should be avoided by people with respiratory problems, but they are wrong. They should just have it at room temperature,” says Pawar.

6. Yoghurt being a great source of Class-I protein that is found from animals, and is great for pre-workout and post-workout consumption as it is easy to digest. “Pre-workout, have a small bowl of Yoghurt with muesli and post-workout, it can be incorporated into a smoothie with nuts, which gives you a great combination of proteins and complex carbohydrates,” says Pawar.

Renu was thrilled to notice that her friend Jyoti was sitting all alone in a party whom she had not met for a long time. Renu approached her and she would play a guessing game with her. After a casual greeting Renu asked her to guess who she was. Jyoti looked a little bewildered and baffled and was unable to recognise her. Renu then reminded her of some childhood pranks that they had played together. Jyoti looked amused but still she was not able to recognise Renu.

It was only when Renu called out Jyoti’s name in an exasperated tone that the latter burst out laughing. She jumped in excitement and hugged Renu. The boring party suddenly became a memorable experience for the two childhood friends. They chatted like two school going girls for the next two hours. Soon everybody came to know about the two girls and the party wrapped up but not for them as Renu invited Jyoti to stay with her for the night.

Both Anne and Peter loved dressing up much to the amusement of everybody. Once Peter wore his mother’s dress and a lady’s hat. Anne wore Peter’s suit and a boy’s cap. Everyone laughed, enjoyed the scene and had a good time. This activity of the children was the only source of recreation for the two families. They lived in constant fear of being exposed which was coupled with the frugal life they were leading. All this was an indication of an immensely courageous spirit. No one cried or lamented for their plight. They kept all their thoughts focused on the future and went about their work thinking of a better tomorrow. The two children Peter and Anne never complained about or thought of the past. They felt very sorry for those Jews who could not make it and were exterminated by the Gestapo. In the light of this they actually felt they were better off than any Jewish children.

Helen tells the readers that reading was not the only pastime for her. Her favourite amusement was sailing. Miss Sullivan and she went to Halifax where they spent the greater part of the summer. They had glorious part of the summer. They had glorious sails on Bed-ford Basin, Me Nabb’s Island, York Redoubt and on the Northwest Arm. They went in a sailboat along with many others to watch the races. A black cloud drifted in from the sea which grew and spread and thickened until it covered the whole sky. The mind rose and the waves chopped angrily at unseen barriers.

Their little boat confronted the gale fearlessly with sails spread and ropes taut. She seemed to sit upon the wind. Now she swirled in the billows. She sprang upward on a gigantic wave. She was to be driven down with angry howl. The mainsail came down. They wrestled with opposing winds. The wind drove them from side to side with fury. They felt no fear because their skipper was the master of the situation. The large craft and the gunboats in the harbour saluted them as they passed them and the seamen shouted applause for them.

He had been kind and tender to Miss Sullivan and her. He made everyone happy in a beautiful way. His loving presence made them happy. He used to take a watchful interest in her work. He used to make their work easy. Whenever Miss Sullivan or Helen was discouraged due to any difficulty, he was there to fight with the difficulties. Helen felt that his passing away left a vacancy in their lives that has never been filled. His death cast a shadow of gloom over her and Helen had never felt so grief stricken except at the time of her father’s death. He was a source of inspiration to everybody around him.

Solution 3:
We know,
Product of two numbers = H.C.F. × L.C.M.
⇒ a x b = H.C.F. x L.C.M.
⇒ 38 x b = 19 x 152
⇒ b = \(\frac { 19\times 152 }{ 38 } \) = 76.
∴ b = 76.

Solution 4:
Given : Sum of zeroes = 6
and product of zeroes = 5
We know, quadratic polynomial is given as,
= k[x² – (Sum of zeroes)x + Product of zeroes]
= k[x² – 6x + 5] where k ≠ 0.

Solution 5:
Given quadratic equation is,
x² – 2kx + 2m = 0
Since, 2 and 3 are roots of the given quadratic equation.
So, putting x = 2, 3 in given equation, we get
3(2)² – 2k(2) + 2m = 0
⇒ 12 – 4k + 2m = 0
and 3(3)² – 2k(3) + 2m=0
⇒ 27 – 6k + 2m = 0
Subtracting equation (i) and (ii), we get
CBSE Sample Papers for Class 10 Maths Paper 4 5
k = \(\frac { 15 }{ 2 } \)
Substituting the value of k in equation (i), we get
12 – 4 x \(\frac { 15 }{ 2 } \) + 2m = 0
12 – 30 + 2m = 0
2m = 18 ⇒ m = 9
∴ k = \(\frac { 15 }{ 2 } \) and m = 9.

Solution 7:
Given numbers are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
L.C.M. of 2, 4, 8 = 8
L.C.M. of 3, 9 = 9
L.C.M. of 5, 10 = 10
L.C.M. of 6, 2, 4, 8, 3, 9 = 8 x 9 = 72
L.C.M. of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 5, 10 = 72 x 5 = 360
L.C.M. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 7 = 360 x 7 = 2520
∴ 2520 is least number which is divisible by all the numbers from 2 to 10.

Solution 8:
Since ∠AOB = 90°
So, ∆AOB is right angle triangle.
We know that in a right angled triangle, mid-point of hypotenuse is equidistant from all three vertices of right angle triangle.
Mid-point of hypotenuse AB = \(\frac { 2x+0 }{ 2 } ,\frac { 0+2y }{ 2 } \) = (x, y)
Hence, C(x, y) is the equidistant from the three vertices of the ∆AOB.

Solution 9:
Total lottery tickets = 1000
∴ n(S) = 1000
Total winner tickets = 5
∴ n(E) = 5
Probability of winning the prize
P(E) = \(\frac { n(E) }{ n(S) } =\frac { 5 }{ 1000 } \) = 0.005.

Solution 10:
Let E be the event of B’s chance of throwing a higher number than 9.
⇒ E= {(4, 6), (6, 4), (5, 5), (5, 6), (6, 5), (6, 6)}
∴ Total chances, n(E) = 6
Hence, probability of throwing a higher number than 9
P(E) = \(\frac { n(E) }{ n(S) } =\frac { 6 }{ 36 } =\frac { 1 }{ 6 } \)

Solution 11:
2x – 3y – 7 = 0
and (k+2)x – (2k+1)y – 3(2k-1)=0

Hence, sum of first 99 even natural number = 9900.

SECTION-C

Solution 13:
Let the number be a = 3q + r where r = 0,1, 2
Case I: When r = 0,
Then a = 3q
It is divisible by 3.
Case II: When r = 1,
Then a = 3q + 1
It is not divisible by 3.
Case III: When r = 2,
Then a = 3q + 2
It is not divisible by 3
These are also three consecutive numbers hence exactly one out of any three consecutive number is divisible by 3.

Given : Dimensions of cuboidal block = 4.4 m x 2.6 m x 1 m
Internal radius of pipe, r = 30 cm = 0.30 m
Thickness of cylindrical pipe = 5 cm
External radius of pipe, R = 30 + 5 cm = 35 cm = 0.35 m
Now, volume of cuboidal block = 4.4 x 2.6 x 1 m³ = 11.44 m³
Volume of the hollow cylindrical pipe = π(R² – r²)h
= π(0.35² – 0.30²)h

Solution 19:
x3 + 2x2 -9x-18
it is divided by x – 3
x – 3 = 0 x = 3
From the given data, we get
f(3) = 21
⇒ (3)3 + 2(3)2 + k(3) = 21
⇒ 27 + 18 + 3k + 3 = 21
⇒ 48 + 3k = 21
⇒ 3k = – 27
⇒ k = – 9
∴ Polynomial becomes
x3 + 2x2 + (-9) x + 3
x3 + 2x2 – 9x + 3
We know,
Dividend = Quotient × Divisor + Remainder
⇒ x3 + 2x2 – 9x + 3 = Quotient × (x – 3) + 21
⇒ x3 + 2x2 – 9x – 18 = Quotient × (x – 3)

and the price of video cassette be Rs y
According to the question,
2x + 3y = 426 …(i)
and 3x + 2y = 350 ….(ii)
Adding equations (i) and (ii), we get
5x + 5y = 776
⇒ x + y = 155.20 ….(iii)
Subtracting equation (ii) from equation (i), we get
– x + y =76 …(iv)
Adding equations (iii) and (iv), we get
2y = 231.20
⇒ y = \(\frac { 231.20 }{ 2 } \) = 115.60
Putting the value of y in equation (iii), we get
x + 115.60 = 125.20
⇒ x = 155.20 – 115.60
⇒ x = 39.60
Thus, Price of audio cassette = Rs 115.60
Price of video cassette = Rs 39.60.

SECTION-A
(Reading 20 Marks)

Question 1.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
1. It is said that everyone lives by selling something. What you can understand by this statement is that teachers live by selling knowledge, philosophers live by selling wisdom and priests eam their living by selling spiritual comfort. Though it may be possible to measure the value of material goods in term of money, it is extremely difficult to estimate the true value of the services which people perform for us.

2.There are times when we would willingly give everything we possess to save our lives, yet we might grudge paying a surgeon a high fee for offering us precisely the same service. The conditions of society are such that skills have to be paid for in the same way that goods are paid for at a shop. Everyone has something to sell.

3.Tramps seem to be the only exception to this general rule. Beggars almost sell themselves as human beings to arouse the pity of passers-by. But real tramps are not beggars. They have nothing to sell and require nothing from others. In seeking independence, they do not sacrifice their human dignity. A tramp may ask you for money but he will never ask you to feel sorry for him. He has deliberately chosen to lead the life he leads and is fully aware of the consequences. He may never be sure where his next meal is coming from, but he is free from the thousands of anxieties which afflict other people. His few material possessions make it possible for him to move from place to place with ease. By having to sleep in the open, he gets far closer to the world of nature than most of us ever do. He may hunt, beg or steal occasionally to keep himself alive; he may even, in times of real need, do a little work; but he will never sacrifice his freedom.

4. We often speak with contempt for tramps and put them in the same class as beggars. But how many of us can honestly say that we have not felt a little envious of their simple way of life and their freedom from any care in the world?

Question 1.1.
On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer any eight of the following questions in brief

  1. What does the author mean by the statement ‘Everyone has something to sell’?
  2. What is the difference between a beggar and a tramp?
  3. How are tramps closer to nature than normal people?
  4. Why should we feel jealous of a tramp?
  5. What is the advantage of being a tramp?
  6. What can he do to keep himself alive?
  7. For what a tramp may never be sure?
  8. Give two examples of selling from the passage.
  9. Find a word in para 2 which is antonym of’material’.

Question 2.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

1. Right from the early Vedic period people have been celebrating the birth of a son, but in those days daughters bom into a family were not neglected but were educated properly. This changed during the later Vedic Age and daughters were considered a social burden. Only girls belonging to upper-class families enjoyed the right of education and got proper nourishment.

2. In the medieval period the conditions deteriorated for the females and, even in royal families, girls could not get the same status as boys. In Muslim households, they were taught at their homes while Hindu girls privileged by getting primary education along with boys in schools. The practice of child marriage was excessively observed. However, in the nineteenth century, many social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, Annie Besant, MG Ranade, Jyotiba Phule, Swami Dayanand Saraswati, etc came forward for the emancipation of women in India. Especially Raja Ram Mohan Roy advocated female education.

3. Since then, there has been tremendous progress in every field but unfortunately, girls are still neglected. In most of the families birth of girl child is not desired, and if accepted, they are considered as inferior to boys and their education is not considered important because it seems a wastage of money of most of the parents. They think it unreasonable because afterward they would be compelled to spend a heavy amount on their dowry. So, the female literacy rate is unsatisfactory and has a direct impact upon the overall development and growth of the nation.

4. If India wants to be a developed nation, it must concentrate on female education because if we educate a man, we educate an individual, but if we educate a woman, we educate an entire family. Again the root cause of all problems facing women is lack of education. If all women are educated, then all problems like female infanticide, dowry, female suicides, domestic battering, malnutrition of women, child marriage and other related atrocities would vanish from India. Education provides an essential qualification to fulfill certain economic, political and cultural functions and improves women’s socio-economic status. It brings reduction in inequalities. If their standard of living is improved, it will indirectly uplift the level of society. If they are financially strong, they will take proper care of their children and provide them with good education.

Question 2.1.
On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer any four of the following questions in brief

  1. In the later vedic age, how were only the girls of upper class families privileged?
  2. How does financial independence of women help them?
  3. Why did people consider education of girls a sheer wastage of money?
  4. What is the root cause of atrocities against women?
  5. Name the reformers who came forward for the emancipation of women.

But that evening all his planning and calculation went wrong when he saw Tini, Tini was getting drenched in the rain and looked at Daksh with longing eyes. Her puppies too were standing close to her as they were scarced to see their first rain. Daksh just could not escape without aiding this helpless animal.

Tini was a street dog, that was loved by all their society members. He discovered that the roof of her shelter had got damaged because of the heavy rain. First, he opened and kept his umbrella on the ground and guided Tini and her puppies under it. Next, he ran to the parking area where he knew there was a thrown away wooden board. It was quite heavy and difficult for him to carry, yet he somehow managed to drag it to the dog’s shelter. He placed it over the shelter as a temporary roof and kept bricks over it. Tini looked at him with gratified eyes and showed her affection by rubbing her head against his feet that little gesture gave him immense contentment.

After the death of her son, Kisa Gotami was grief stricken. Her grief had blinded her to the truth of life and death. Buddha wanted Kisa Gotami to understand that the life of mortals in this world is troubled, brief and full of pain. So Buddha asked her to go and beg for a handful of mustard seeds from a house where no one had died. She could find none. It was then that she understood the depth of Buddha’s sermon about life and death.

The realisation that life of all human beings is like the flickering of lights which illuminate for some time and then get extinguised to light up again. Death and decay does not spare any mortal so lamenting for the dead serves no purpose.

A courageous person can take risk and move towards the achievement of one’s goals steadily. Courage is the quality of overcoming one’s fears. A fearless person can achieve his aim in life if he has the ability to perform under difficult situations. Many great leaders could only get success just because of being courageous like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and many more, they wanted to make India independent country from the clutches of Britishers non-violently. Anyone who has control over emotions and can face any situation fearlessly, will surely be able to accomplish his/her dreams.

Answer 11.
We leam a lot about dating among the Jews from Anne’s diary. Even at the young age of thirteen she was allowed to “date”, that is go out with boys and have boy friends. Anne called having admirable, “as a vice rampart in her school.” If a boy offered to accompany her on bicycle to her home, nine times out of ten he had become attracted to her. But sometimes some boys offered “to ask father’s permission” or pick up her school bag, she had to switch off the conversation to another topic. This clearly shows that Jewish society did not mind friendship between boys and girls but certain rules or norms of behaviour had to be followed. This is brought out clearly in her friendship with Hellow Silberberg. He became a friend, visited her family, took her out, talked about his former girl friend.

He even told Anne that his grandmother thought she was too young to be his friend. Anne began to think he was in love with her and her mother and sister teased her about him. Certain rules about dating become clear. A boy and a girl went out only when the boy met the girl’s parents and asked their permission. There was a time limit to staying out. Anne’s father was furious when Hello bought Anne home at ten past eight and not before eight p.m. Parents of both the boy and girl knew that they were dating!

Besides this, they were also forbidden to participate in public sports and visit places of entertainment.

Horrific I crimes were committed by the Nazi regime. The Jews lost their businesses and unemployment if reached unprecedented levels and they were imprisoned in several types of camps. The Jews could not think of going out as they were afraid to be captured by the Germans.

Their thoughts and actions (while in the Annexe) were governed by the fear of being discovered and its inevitable results could be the gas chamber on the concentration camp. But in spite of their feelings of uncertainty and fear, they tried to take the most of their restricted existence and were optimistic about the war to end. They proved to be the role models for the world.

Helen went to Cambridge School in order to prepare for Radcliffe College. Cambridge was an all girl’s school with no prior accommodation for deaf and blind students. Though Ms Sullivan accompanied Helen at the school. There were too many words for her to be spelt into Helen’s hand. Moreover it was very difficult to get textbooks embossed in time for Helen to use at school. There were many prescribed books, so finger spellings were difficult. Helen could not take class notes instead she types everything on her typewriter. It was very exhausting, for Ms. Sullivan to spell everything into Helen’s hand. The drawbacks were too many to her progress in Cambridge. Exams caused a lot of stress as Helen was well versed in literary Braille but not in signs of Algebra, Geometry and Maths and hence difficulty arose.

She was sorely perplexed and felt discouraged. Moreover she could not follow with eyes the geometrical figures drawn on the blackboard. She had to make them on her cushion with strings and curved wires which had to be bent and pointed. Sometimes she lost courage and vent out her frustration on Ms. Sullivan. At one point Mr. Gillman thought Helen was working too hard so he reduced the number of recitations for her, the result was that she could not take her final exam with her class. Differences between Mr. Gillman and Ms. Sullivan resulted in the withdrawal of Helen and Mildred from Cambridge.

OR

Helen continued her studies under a tutor, Mr. Merton S. Keith of Cambridge. Mr. Keith came twice a week and taught Algebra, Geometry, Greek and Latin and Miss Sullivan interpreted all that for her. Mr. Keith delightly gave lessons five times a week and also explained the previous lessons along with correcting Greek assignments of Helen. Mr. Keith contributed a lot to the intellectual encrichment of Helen. He came in Helen’s life at a very crucial point of time. Mr. Gillman felt that Helen would require at least two years more than the normal girls to qualify for Radcliffe. However Anne Sullivan and Helen’s mom did not agree with him. Finally Helen was taken away from Cambridge School.

They went to live with their friends at Wrenthan. Here Mr. Keith was appointed to give Helen and her sister tuitions. Mr. Keith helped prepare for the examination to get admission in the Radcliffe college. Helen understood that for her learning individually was much easier than learning in a group. He made her learning joyful. He helped her improve her logical and analytical faculties. He also gave her tests to rectify her errors. He trained her and helped her pass the examination for Radcliffe. He was a sincere and devoted teacher.
