गंगा एक सुंदर युवती का रूप धारण कर नदी के किनारे खड़ी हुई थी। शांतनु ने जब उसको देखा तो वह उसके रूप पर मोहित हो गया। शांतनु ने गंगा के सामने विवाह का प्रस्ताव रखा। गंगा ने सशर्त उनके प्रस्ताव को मान लिया।

गंगा से कितने पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए। शांतनु गंगा के किस व्यवहार से चकित होते थे?
उत्तर:
गंगा से आठ पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए। गंगा पुत्र के पैदा होते ही उसे गंगा की धारा में प्रवाहित कर देती थी। शांतनु गंगा के इस व्यवहार को देखकर चकित होते थे।

गंगा एक सुंदर युवती का रूप धारण कर नदी के किनारे खड़ी थी। जैसे ही शांतनु ने उसकी ओर देखा, वह उसके सौंदर्य पर मोहित हो गया। गंगा ने शांतनु की पत्नी होना सशर्त स्वीकार कर लिया। गंगा ने कई पुत्रों को जन्म दिया। शर्त के अनुसार गंगा अपने सभी पुत्रों को जन्म के साथ ही नदी में प्रवाहित करती रही। इस प्रकार अपने सात पुत्रों को नदी की धारा में बहा देने के बाद जब वह आठवें पुत्र को भी नदी में बहाने के लिए ले जा रही थी तो शांतनु से रहा नहीं गया। उसने गंगा से ऐसा करने से मना किया। गंगा शांतनु की बात को सुनकर बनावटी क्रोध दिखाती हुई बोली कि राजन्! आप अपनी शर्त भूल गए हैं? शर्त के अनुसार मैं अब यहाँ नहीं रह सकती। आपके इस अंतिम बालक का पालन पोषण मैं करूँगी और फिर पुरस्कार के रूप में तुम्हें सौंप दूंगी। गंगा के चले जाने पर शांतनु का मन विरक्त हो गया। उनका मन अब राजकाज में भी नहीं लगता था। एक दिन शिकार खेलते हुए उन्होंने देखा कि एक बालक ने अपने बाणों से गंगा की धारा को रोक रखा है। तभी गंगा उनके सामने आई और बोली राजन्! क्या आपने मुझे और इस युवक को नहीं पहचाना। यह आपका आठवाँ पुत्र देवव्रत है। आपका पुत्र मैं अब तुम्हें सौंप रही हूँ। इसे अपने साथ ले जाइए।

अयोध्या कैसी नगरी थी?
उत्तर:
सरयू नदी के किनारे बसी अयोध्या बहुत ही सुंदर नगरी थी। वहाँ का राज-महल तो भव्य था ही, आम लोगों के घर भी बहुत सुंदर थे। अयोध्या में चौड़ी-चौड़ी सड़कें व सुंदर बाग-बगीचे थे। अयोध्या के कोने-कोने में संपन्नता बिखरी पड़ी थी, विपन्नता का कहीं नाम न था।

राजा दशरथ कैसे राजा थे?
उत्तर:
राजा दशरथ एक कुशल योद्धा व न्यायप्रिय शासक थे। वे रघुकुल की रीति एवं नीति का पूरी तरह पालन करते थे। वे मर्यादाओं का पालन करने वाले एक सदाचारी राजा थे।

प्रश्न 3.
राजा दशरथ की चिंता का क्या कारण था?
उत्तर:
राजा दशरथ वृद्धावस्था की ओर बढ़ते जा रहे थे। उनकी तीन रानियाँ थीं, परन्तु किसी रानी से भी कोई संतान न थी। इस कारण उन्हें अपना जीवन सूना-सूना सा लगता था।

राजा दशरथ महर्षि वशिष्ठ के पास क्यों गए? मुनि वशिष्ठ ने उनको क्या परामर्श दिया?
उत्तर:
दशरथ संतान न होने से चिंतित होकर परामर्श लेने के लिए मुनि वशिष्ठ के पास गए। वशिष्ठ ने उनको पुत्रेष्ठि यज्ञ करने की सलाह दी।

राजा दशरथ ने मुनि वशिष्ठ के परामर्श से तपस्वी ऋष्यशृंग की देखरेख में सरयू नदी के किनारे पुत्रेष्ठि यज्ञ किया। अग्नि-देवता ने प्रसन्न होने पर दशरथ को आशीर्वाद दिया जिसके फलस्वरूप दशरथ की तीनों रानियों के पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए। कौशल्या ने राम को, सुमित्रा ने लक्ष्मण व शत्रुघ्न को तथा कैकेयी ने भरत को जन्म दिया।

उत्तर:
राजकुमारों के बड़े होने पर गुरु वशिष्ठ ने राजकुमारों की शिक्षा प्रारंभ की। वे उनको अपने साथ ले गए तथा शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के बाद ही वे अयोध्या लौटे।

विश्वामित्र कौन थे? वे राजा दशरथ के पास किस प्रयोजन से आए थे?
उत्तर:
विश्वामित्र पहले एक राजा थे। बाद में राजपाट छोड़कर वे संन्यासी बन गए थे। वे सिद्धि के लिए एक यज्ञ कर रहे थे, परन्तु राक्षस बार-बाद उनके यज्ञ में बाधा डाल रहे थे। राक्षसों से यज्ञ की रक्षा हेतु वे राम को अपने साथ ले जाने के लिए राजा दशरथ के पास आए थे।

राजा दशरथ राम को विश्वामित्र के साथ भेजने में संकोच क्यों कर रहे थे?
उत्तर:
दशरथ को वृद्धावस्था में पुत्रों की प्राप्ति हुई थी। वे राम से बहुत स्नेह करते थे। उनको लगता था कि वे राम के बिना नहीं रह सकेंगे। दूसरे, उनको यह डर था कि सोलह वर्ष का बालक मायावी राक्षसों से किस प्रकार यज्ञ की रक्षा कर सकेगा। किसी अनिष्ट की आशंका के कारण उनका मन व्यथित हो रहा था।

बात बिगड़ती देख वशिष्ठ ने राजा दशरथ को क्या समझाया?
उत्तर:
वशिष्ठ ने राजा दशरथ को उनकी प्रतिज्ञा एवं राम की शक्ति के बारे में बताया। उन्होंने कहा कि आपको अपनी प्रतिज्ञा का पालन करना चाहिए। विश्वामित्र एक सिद्ध पुरुष हैं। वे अनेक गुप्त विद्याओं के ज्ञाता हैं। वे कुछ सोचकर ही यहाँ आए हैं। राम विश्वामित्र से नई विद्याएँ सीख सकेंगे। अतः वे राम को विश्वामित्र के साथ जाने दें।

यह कथा अवध की है। सरयू नदी के किनारे बसे अवध को अयोध्या के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। अयोध्या बहुत ही सुंदर नगरी थी। अयोध्या के राजमहल तो सुंदर थे ही, वहाँ आम लोगों के घर भी सुंदर थे। वहाँ चौड़ी-चौड़ी सड़कें व सुंदर बाग-बगीचे थे। अयोध्या हर तरह से संपन्न नगरी थी।

अयोध्या कोसल राज्य की राजधानी थी। दशरथ उस राज्य के राजा थे, जो बहुत बड़े योद्धा और कुशल प्रशासक थे। वे अज के पुत्र थे। रघुकुल के वंशज होने के कारण वे सभी लोक-मर्यादाओं का भली-भाँति पालन करते थे। राजा दशरथ की तीन रानियाँ थीं-कौशल्या, सुमित्रा और कैकेयी। रानियों को केवल एक ही दुःख था कि उनकी कोई संतान न थी। राजा दशरथ की उम्र बढ़ती जा रही थी। दशरथ भी इस कारण बहुत चिंतित रहते थे। उन्होंने मुनि वशिष्ठ से इस विषय में बात की। मुनि ने उनको पुत्रेष्ठि यज्ञ करने की सलाह दी। तपस्वी ऋष्यशृंग की देखरेख में सरयू नदी के किनारे यज्ञ प्रारंभ हुआ। यज्ञ की अंतिम आहुति राजा दशरथ द्वारा दी गई। यज्ञ के प्रभाव से अग्निदेवता प्रकट हुए और उन्होंने दशरथ को आशीर्वाद दिया। उनके आशीर्वाद से तीनों रानियाँ गर्भवती हो गईं। महारानी कौशल्या ने राम, सुमित्रा ने लक्ष्मण व शत्रुघ्न व कैकेयी ने भरत को जन्म दिया। नगर में राजा ने बहुत बड़े समारोह का आयोजन किया।

चारों राजकुमार धीरे-धीरे बड़े हुए। उन चारों भाइयों में बहुत गहरा प्रेम था। बड़े होने पर चारों राजकुमारों को मुनि वशिष्ठ के पास शिक्षा-दीक्षा के लिए भेजा गया। जल्दी ही वे चारों सभी विद्याओं में पारंगत हो गए। राम में अन्य गुण भी थे। राम दशरथ को सबसे प्रिय थे। शिक्षा-दीक्षा के बाद इन चारों राजुकमारों के विवाह की चर्चा चलने लगी। पुरोहितों को भी इस चर्चा में शामिल किया गया। एक दिन द्वारपाल घबराता हुआ आया कि ऋषि विश्वामित्र पधारे हैं। महाराज दशरथ उनके सम्मान में तत्काल अपना आसन छोड़कर खड़े हो गए। दशरथ ने विश्वामित्र की सेवा करने के बाद पूछा कि मुझे आज्ञा दें, मैं और क्या सेवा करूँ? विश्वामित्र ने कहा-मैं सिद्धि के लिए यज्ञ कर रहा हूँ। राक्षस मेरे यज्ञ में बाधा डाल रहे हैं, अतः यज्ञ की रक्षा के लिए आप अपने ज्येष्ठ पुत्र को मुझे दें। यह सुनकर दशरथ पर तो मानो बिजली गिर गई। वे मूर्छित होकर गिर पड़े। यह देखकर विश्वामित्र का क्रोध बढ़ता जा रहा था। दशरथ कहने लगे-हे महामुनि! मेरा राम तो अभी सोलह वर्ष का भी नहीं हुआ। वह राक्षसों का सामना कैसे करेगा? आप कहें तो मैं आपके साथ चलता हूँ।

दशरथ की इस प्रकार की बातें सुनकर विश्वामित्र का क्रोध भड़क उठा। वे दशरथ से बोले कि आप रघुकुल की रीति तोड़ रहे हैं। यदि आप राम को मेरे साथ नहीं भेजते तो मैं यहाँ से खाली हाथ लौट जाऊँगा। बात बढ़ती देख मुनि वशिष्ठ ने आगे आकर दशरथ को समझाया और बताया कि विश्वामित्र के साथ रहने में राम का बहुत बड़ा लाभ है। वशिष्ठ की बातों को सुनकर दशरथ की चिंता कम हुई।

दशरथ ने मुनि वशिष्ठ की बातों को दुःखी मन से स्वीकार कर लिया। वे राम को अकेले नहीं भेजना चाहते थे। अतः उन्होंने लक्ष्मण को भी राम के साथ भेजने की विनती विश्वामित्र से की। राम और लक्ष्मण को तत्काल दरबार में बुलाकर विश्वामित्र के साथ जाने का निर्णय सुनाया। दोनों भाई सहर्ष उनके साथ जाने को तैयार हो गए। दोनों भाई नितान्त गंभीर माहौल में माताओं की आज्ञा लेकर यज्ञ की रक्षा हेतु विश्वामित्र के साथ चल पड़े।
